A disproportionate number of cases of severe abuse and neglect involve children who have disabilities. Some of the cases involve well-meaning couples adopt large numbers of disabled children and then find themselves unable to properly care for all of them. Sometimes the children are left in unsanitary conditions and not given the care they need. Some are kept in cagesostensibly for their own protection, and others are given insufficient food and become malnourished. When children with disabilities are homeschooled, their care rests solely in their parents’ hands. When those parents do not properly exercise their responsibilities, the results can be disastrous.
